In a standout performance on the 2024 Spring NJSLA (New Jersey Student Learning Assessment), Newark Educators Community Charter School (NECCS) is making waves across the city by demonstrating significant academic growth and ranking among the top schools in Newark.
According to newly released data from the NJDOE School Report Card, NECCS students are excelling in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The school achieved an overall average proficiency score of 48.68%, which places NECCS second only to North Star Academy, and notably above all other charter and district schools in Newark.
Academic Highlights:
4th Grade ELA: NECCS topped the chart with 64.00% of students meeting or exceeding expectations—the highest score across all schools and grades reported.
3rd Grade Math: 45.50% of NECCS students met or exceeded expectations, surpassing many local peers.
4th Grade Math: NECCS maintained strong performance with 48.80% of students meeting expectations.
Average ELA Proficiency: 50.20%
Average Math Proficiency: 47.15%
Compared to other Newark schools such as Roseville Community (32.53% overall), Great Oaks (29.88%), and KIPP (20.15%), NECCS’s scores reflect a consistent and growing academic excellence.
This year’s results signal a major academic turnaround and highlight the effectiveness of NECCS’s instructional strategies, dedicated staff, and student-focused learning environment. As the only school to reach over 50% in average ELA proficiency (besides North Star), NECCS is closing the gap and proving that high-quality education is alive and thriving in Newark’s charter sector.
A Message of Growth and Promise
These impressive results not only mark a significant year-over-year improvement for NECCS, but they also affirm the school’s position as a rising leader in Newark’s educational landscape. The school community—staff, students, and families—should be immensely proud of this achievement.
NECCS’s success shows that with the right supports and high expectations, students from all backgrounds can excel and surpass city and state averages. As NECCS continues to push forward, it’s clear they are not just participating in the competition—they’re leading it.
