Mission Statement
Newark Educators’ Community Charter School is a rigorous learning community that supports students’ academic, social and personal growth. Student achievement is measured by New Jersey State tests, writing portfolios, on-going reading and math assessments, and social studies and science projects that demonstrate their academic progress. Students learn to be critical thinkers who achieve a solid foundation of skills and knowledge. We actively promote the tolerance and appreciation of human diversity through school-wide program programming. Our staff works with every student to develop the confidence to confront challenges as a foundation for personal and academic success in high school and beyond.

Philosophy
Our educational program provides an engaging curriculum that is responsive to students’ individual needs. Each classroom of 25 students has two co-teachers so that students are given the support they need and deserve to meet high expectations.  Academic program highlights include:

  • The Balanced Literacy Approach promotes student progress in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Daily students receive individualized instruction  through reading and writing conferences, strategically targeted skill instruction in small groups, and whole class instruction that builds the knowledge and skills to be effective readers and writers.
  • The Investigations Math Program teaches students to develop a variety of problem solving strategies and to share their solutions, as well as apply math skills to real world contexts.
  • The FOSS Science Program teaches children important scientific concepts while developing the critical thinking and skills of real scientists, such as  observing, testing hypotheses, and analyzing new information.
  • The Social Studies Inquiry Approach teaches students the skills and knowledge of researchers through two in-depth, inter-disciplinary studies each year. Students learn to formulate their own questions, investigate a range of topics, and present what they learn in written, visual and oral formats.

Growth
NECCS opened its doors in September 2009 to serve 200 students in grades K through 3. The school will add a grade each year until it reaches its full enrollment of 450 students in grades K through 8
